A Heart Like a Mirror – Seeing Others, Reflecting Ourselves

Worship Song

“Open the Eyes of My Heart” – Paul Baloche

This song is a prayer asking God to open the eyes of our hearts so that we may see His glory and, in turn, see others as He does—with love and grace. Often, our hearts are clouded by judgment and criticism, but when we allow God to change our perspective, we begin to reflect His love instead of our biases.

Lyrics |

Verse:

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord

Open the eyes of my heart

I want to see You

I want to see You

Chorus:

To see You high and lifted up

Shining in the light of Your glory

Pour out Your power and love

As we sing holy, holy, holy

Bridge:

Holy, holy, holy

Holy, holy, holy

Holy, holy, holy

I want to see You

Key Scripture

7:1-5 | Matthew 7:1-5

English (NIV):

1. Do not judge, or you too will be judged.

2. For in the same way you judge others, you will be judged, and with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.

3. Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?

4. How can you say to your brother, ‘Let me take the speck out of your eye,’ when all the time there is a plank in your own eye?

5. You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

Reflection

Our hearts are like mirrors—how we judge others reflects what is inside us. If we often see others with a critical eye, it may reveal pride, dissatisfaction, or insecurity within ourselves. But if we view others with grace and compassion, it shows that we live in God’s love.

Before correcting others, we must first examine ourselves. Are we blind to our own flaws while pointing out the faults of others?

If our hearts are clouded with pride, we will never see others clearly. Only when we humble ourselves and allow God’s Word to reveal our own blind spots can we truly help others.

When we pray “Open the eyes of my heart, Lord,” we are not only asking to see God’s glory but also to see others through His eyes. Only then can our hearts become a clear mirror, reflecting Christ’s love instead of our own biases.

Reflection Questions

1. Who have I recently judged or criticized? What does this reveal about my own heart?

2. Do I hold others to a higher standard than I hold myself? How can I learn to judge with fairness and mercy?

3. If God wants to change one of my perspectives today, what would it be? How can I pray for His eyes to see others differently?
