Session 1 | The Life of a Mature Disciple
Big Idea
Introduction
When we think about building healthy small groups, our minds often turn to meeting formats, Bible study techniques, icebreakers, or leadership skills. Yet when we return to the Gospels, we discover that Jesus did not begin by teaching His disciples how to lead meetings. He spent three years walking with them, shaping their lives before sending them to establish His Church. Healthy small groups, therefore, are not the product of good techniques but the natural fruit of transformed lives.
Beginning with the Greatest Commandment
When Jesus was asked about the greatest commandment, He replied, “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind.” He then added, “Love your neighbour as yourself” (Matthew 22:37–39). This passage is often understood as a call to love God and love others. Yet Jesus also assumes something else: we must rightly understand ourselves if we are to love others well. A mature disciple, therefore, grows in three interconnected relationships—with God, with oneself, and with others.
Looking at the Diagram
This diagram is not presenting a new theory but offering a visual framework for understanding Christian maturity. The three circles represent our relationship with God, ourselves, and others. Their intersection reminds us that Christ stands at the centre, bringing these relationships into healthy balance rather than allowing one to overshadow the others.
Growing in Our Relationship with God
Everything begins with God. Many believers are busy serving faithfully, yet busyness is not the same as maturity. Without an intimate walk with God, ministry can easily become duty rather than delight. Mature disciples learn to worship, pray, read Scripture, and obey because true transformation flows from abiding in Christ rather than striving in our own strength.
Knowing Ourselves
Spiritual maturity also involves an honest understanding of ourselves. We learn to recognise both our God-given gifts and our limitations. We allow God to expose the places in our hearts that still need healing and transformation. True self-awareness is not about building self-confidence but about grounding our identity in Christ rather than in the approval of others.
Loving Others
Mature disciples do not remain isolated in private spirituality. Jesus calls us into community where we learn to love, encourage, forgive, and support one another. Healthy relationships are not merely the result of successful small groups; they are one of the clearest evidences of a life being transformed by Christ.
Conclusion
Before learning how to lead a small group, we must first ask ourselves, What kind of person am I becoming? A small group will ultimately reflect not the leader’s techniques but the leader’s character. Healthy small groups always begin with disciples who are continually being transformed by Christ.
Reflection|
Which of your relationships—with God, yourself, or others—is currently the healthiest?
Which one do you sense God is inviting you to grow in?
Discussion|
Think of a spiritual leader or small group leader who has deeply influenced you.
Was it their ability or their character that impacted you most? Why?
Practice|
Set aside time this week to prayerfully reflect on these three relationships. Identify one area where you need to grow, and invite a trusted spiritual friend to pray with you over the coming week.
