Session 6 | The Four Phases of a Small Group
Big Idea
A small group is like a living organism. It has seasons of growth and struggle, but as we faithfully follow God, it can continually mature and become a blessing to others.
"Speaking the truth in love, we will grow to become in every respect the mature body of Him who is the head, that is, Christ." (Ephesians 4:15–16, NIV)
引言|Introduction
In the previous five sessions, we explored the life of a mature disciple, learned to walk alongside people at different stages of their spiritual journey, cultivated authentic relationships and trust, and discovered the Four W's of a healthy small group. Yet even a healthy group does not remain in the same season forever.
Just as a person grows from infancy to maturity, a small group also moves through different seasons—from initial unfamiliarity, to deepening relationships, through seasons of conflict and adjustment, and eventually to a maturity where members support one another, reach outward, and even send people out to start new groups.
Without understanding these natural seasons, we may grow discouraged when tension arises, mistaking it for failure. But when we recognise this as a normal part of growth, we can walk through each stage with faith and patience.
Looking at the Diagram
This diagram describes four stages in the life of a small group, each carrying its own lessons from God.
Stage One: Exploration Phase. This is when a group is newly formed. Members are still getting to know one another. The most important task is to build a foundation of safety, so that everyone feels free to open up.
Stage Two: Transition Phase. As relationships deepen, expectations rise, and conflict begins to surface. This does not mean the group has failed—it is a necessary part of growing toward maturity. The key task in this stage is to adjust direction and deepen trust, allowing conflict to become an opportunity for deeper understanding rather than a cause for division.
Stage Three: Expansion Phase. Having worked through conflict and adjustment, the group's relationships become stronger. Members support one another, serve together, and begin reaching outward. This is often the most vibrant season—marked by open communication, mutual support, and a shift from focusing inward to reaching those beyond the group who need the gospel.
Stage Four: Multiplication and Renewal Phase. The group matures further, breaking through to new levels of growth, and may even send members out to begin new groups so that more people can experience spiritual family. A group in this stage is no longer content to meet only its own needs; it actively serves, expands, and blesses many others.
When a Group Drifts from Its Mission, It Can Also Decline
This diagram also honestly reminds us that a group which drifts from its mission can stagnate or even decline.
When a group loses authenticity, relationships grow cold and members merely try to keep the peace. When a group turns inward for protection, resisting change and breakthrough, growth stops. When service decreases, and the group only seeks to satisfy its own needs, it loses its appeal to others. When no new people come, members eventually leave. When the atmosphere grows dull, passion fades and love grows cold. Finally, if these warning signs are ignored, a group may disband—its life stagnates, and its witness disappears.
These warning signs are not meant to instil fear but to help us stay alert. A healthy small group is not one that never faces challenges, but one that is willing to honestly face these warning signs and return to God, responding afresh to His leading.
God Grows His People Together
Scripture describes the church as a body that grows together. Paul reminds believers that as we "speak the truth in love," the whole body matures in Christ and builds itself up in love. (Ephesians 4:15–16)
The goal of a small group, therefore, is not to remain fixed at the peak of the Expansion Phase, nor to fear the tension of the Transition Phase. Rather, it is to live a balanced life of fellowship, growth, service, mission, and worship—staying close to God's mission, continuing to love, serve, and reach outward, so the group may experience peaks, breakthroughs, and avoid the path of decline.
結語|Conclusion
A healthy small group does not remain in the same season forever, nor does it need to compare its pace with other groups. God leads each community according to its unique needs.
Small groups are not meant to last forever, but to see lives mature and be sent out to bless more people. Whether a group is in the Exploration Phase or the Multiplication and Renewal Phase, our greatest concern is not how quickly it progresses, but whether it is faithfully responding to God's leading in this season.
Although this series comes to an end, the journey of building healthy small groups has only just begun. May God continue to lead us faithfully through every season, so that our small groups become communities where believers shepherd one another, build one another up, and bear witness to Christ together.
Reflection|
Looking back, which stage best describes your small group right now—Exploration, Transition, Expansion, or Multiplication and Renewal? What specific signs led you to that conclusion?
Discussion|
Among the six warning signs of decline (loss of authenticity, turning inward, less service, no newcomers, a dull atmosphere, eventual disbandment), which one do you think your group most needs to guard against? As a member, how can you help prevent your group from drifting in that direction?
Practice|
Pray together as a small group and set one shared goal for the next three months to help your group faithfully move toward its next step—for example, if you are in the Transition Phase, plan a time for honest conversation; if in the Expansion Phase, plan a shared act of service or outreach; if already in the Multiplication and Renewal Phase, begin praying and preparing to send members out to start a new group.
