Session 4 | Walking Together in Life, Building Trust
Big Idea
Life-on-life discipleship is not built in a single meeting, but through trust that grows as we faithfully walk alongside one another.
“I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends.” (John 15:15, NIV)
Introduction
In the previous session, we learned that mature leaders first allow God to shape their own lives and cultivate authentic relationships. Yet as we begin walking alongside others, we soon discover that meaningful relationships are not built through a single meeting or one heartfelt conversation.
Some people begin to connect after a simple greeting. Others need more time before they feel ready to share their lives. Still others, through years of faithful companionship, become trusted friends who encourage and strengthen one another in Christ.
For this reason, mature leaders do not rush relationships or expect everyone to open up at the same pace. Instead, they value every opportunity to walk alongside others, helping each relationship take its next step.
Jesus Walked with His Disciples
When Jesus called His disciples, He did not teach them everything at once, nor did He immediately entrust them with His mission. Instead, He invited them to follow Him. Together they shared everyday life—learning, serving, celebrating, and even facing failure side by side.
Near the end of His earthly ministry, Jesus said, “I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends.” (John 15:15). Friendship was not simply a new title. It was the fruit of a relationship that had grown through time, trust, and shared life.
In the same way, God continues to shape His disciples today through life-on-life relationships, inviting us to walk faithfully alongside others as they grow in Christ.
Looking at the Diagram
Every relationship develops at its own pace.
Some begin with a simple introduction. Others gradually grow into friendship. Over time, a few become relationships where people share life, encourage one another, and faithfully walk together in Christ.
This diagram is not meant to rank relationships or suggest that every friendship must reach the deepest level. Rather, it reminds us that every relationship has room to grow.
Every relationship has a next step.
Sometimes that next step is simply offering a warm welcome. Sometimes it is taking time to listen with genuine care. At other times, it may be praying together, encouraging one another, or growing together in faith.
Mature leaders do not pressure people to move more quickly than they are ready. Instead, they patiently walk alongside each person, trusting God to deepen relationships in His time.
A Leader’s Greatest Responsibility Is to Walk Alongside Others
Many leaders hope to build a loving and caring small group. Yet genuine relationships do not simply develop because people attend the same meetings, participate in the same activities, or serve together.
Life-on-life discipleship is built through faithful presence. It means showing up consistently in the lives of others—listening well, offering encouragement, praying faithfully, and caring for people through both ordinary and difficult seasons. Though these moments may seem small, they are often how trust begins to grow.
Mature leaders do more than facilitate meetings. They intentionally walk alongside people, helping each person take the next step in their journey with Christ and with one another.
Conclusion
Walking alongside others is not a technique to master but a journey to embrace.
Jesus did not rush His disciples toward maturity. He patiently walked with them, building relationships, cultivating trust, and shaping their lives over time.
Today, God invites us to do the same—to value every encounter, faithfully nurture every relationship, and help each person take their next step of faith.
In our next session, we will explore what makes a healthy small group. Beyond meaningful relationships, healthy groups grow through a balanced life of Worship, Fellowship, Discipleship, and Mission—four essential dimensions of a Christ-centred community.
Reflection|
Think of someone who has faithfully walked alongside you in your spiritual journey.
What did they do that helped you trust them and take your next step of faith?
Discussion|
Looking at the diagram, where would you place your relationships with different members of your small group?
Is there someone God may be inviting you to help take the next step? What might that next step look like?
Practice|
This week, intentionally reach out to one person in your small group.
Send a message, make a phone call, or invite them for coffee. Rather than trying to solve problems, simply listen well, care for them, and pray together.
Afterwards, reflect on these questions:
- What is the next step in this relationship?
- How did I help strengthen trust today?
- How can I continue walking alongside this person as we grow together in Christ?
