Session 2 | Everyone Is on a Spiritual Journey
Big Idea
Shepherding is not about making everyone the same, but faithfully walking with each person toward the next step God has prepared for them.
“It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” (Mark 2:17, NIV)
Introduction
Last session we reflected on the life of a mature disciple and discovered that healthy small groups begin with leaders whose lives are continually being transformed by Christ. Yet as we begin leading people, we quickly encounter another reality: no two people are the same.
Some are just beginning to explore the Christian faith. Others have been believers for many years but continue to wrestle with personal struggles. Still others are ready to serve and help others grow. When we expect everyone to mature in the same way, our small groups can easily become places of comparison rather than communities of grace.
A mature leader therefore learns not only how to teach Scripture, but also how to understand people.
Jesus Shepherded People According to Where They Were
Throughout the Gospels, Jesus never used the same approach with everyone. His ministry was not a fixed programme but a journey of walking alongside people. He first recognised where each person was and then lovingly led them toward the next step.
Zacchaeus was ready to repent, so Jesus invited Himself into his home. Nicodemus was searching for truth, so Jesus patiently explained the new birth. The Samaritan woman carried deep wounds, so Jesus first built a relationship before confronting the deeper issues of her life. Peter possessed great passion but little maturity, so Jesus spent three years shaping his character before entrusting him with leadership.
Different people. Different starting points. Different next steps. Yet the same Shepherd faithfully led each of them toward God’s purpose.
Looking at the Diagram
The Engel Scale is not a spiritual report card. It is not designed to rank people or measure who is more mature. Instead, it provides a simple visual reminder that faith is a journey rather than a single moment.
Rather than memorising every stage, notice the bigger picture. People stand at different places in their journey. Some are resistant to the gospel, some are seeking, some have come to faith, while others are learning to become mature disciples.
The value of the Engel Scale is not simply identifying where someone is today. Its greatest value is helping us ask:
“What is the next step God may be inviting this person to take?”
In many ways, the Engel Scale does not introduce a new philosophy of ministry. It simply illustrates the way Jesus Himself shepherded people.
A Leader’s Greatest Responsibility Is to Walk Alongside People
Many leaders naturally focus on helping people grow as quickly as possible. We often ask, “What should I teach?” or “How can I help this person change?” Yet Jesus often began not by instructing, but by walking alongside people. He listened before He corrected. He invited before He challenged.
True shepherding begins with discernment. Before deciding what someone needs to hear, we first seek to understand where they are. Different people require different forms of care. Mature leaders do not force everyone into the same mould; they faithfully accompany each person toward God’s calling.
Conclusion
A healthy small group is not one where everyone stands in the same place, but one where everyone continues taking faithful steps forward. Likewise, a mature leader is not someone who brings everyone to the same destination, but someone who faithfully walks with each person toward the next step God has prepared.
In our next session, we will explore another essential question. If we hope to guide others well, we must first understand ourselves. We often see people’s behaviour, but God sees the heart. Through the Satir Iceberg and the Johari Window, we will learn how deeper self-awareness lays the foundation for authentic relationships.
Reflection|
Where are you on your spiritual journey today? What do you sense is the next step God is inviting you to take?
Discussion|
Think of someone who patiently walked alongside you.
Rather than trying to change you immediately, they first sought to understand you. How did that journey shape your life?
Practice|
This week, invite one member for coffee or stay after your gathering for a meaningful conversation. Instead of giving advice, ask thoughtful questions and listen carefully. Afterwards, pray and ask yourself: “What might be the next step God is inviting this person to take?”
